HomeNLSIU, BAR Council of Kerala M.K. Nambyar Academy For Continuing Legal Education, Kochi And State Government of Karnataka 2019 One Week Refresher Course for Law Teachers

About the courses/programs

National Law School of India University from its very beginning has been involved in organizing U.G.C. – Sponsored Refresher Courses for law teachers aimed to advance the quality of teaching and research in all branches of law both at the graduate and post-graduate levels. The duration of the courses varied between one week to three weeks and the subject areas extended to substantive and procedural courses.

On line with the above, the present Refresher Course will look at the syllabus, study materials and teaching methods of Constitutional Law, International Law, Environmental Law, Human Rights Law, Contract Law, Business Law and Arbitration Law. Updating recent developments in knowledge and skills on the laws as well as emerging tools and techniques for better teaching/learning of these subjects will be the focus of the course.

About the Theme for 2019. The modern legal education has become very challenging since advent of the information available from all dimensions through technology. It has become very crucial for the teachers to adopt new methods and strategies to teach students of law so that they can differentiate between the irrelevant information available on the Google that may not always be correct and the authentic sources of information; it can confuse the students if they are not guided properly.

In this background, the role of teachers has become important to provide the updated knowledge and information and also provide them guidance to think critically about the existing practices of law. The main teaching strategy should focus upon the student’s independent thinking about critical analysis and self-learning. Interactive methods of teaching may help in this regard by encouraging interest in the law subjects and professions. Purpose of legal education today, must not be merely producing law graduates, but producing practice-ready law graduates. This may be achieved by revising the present theoretical curriculum and including more practical activities, which give the students an outlook into the profession and they are aware of litigation and legal processes by the time they graduate. Clinical curriculum materials, mock trials, drafting legal opinion, RTI filing and PIL filings may be some of the proposed inclusions in the legal curriculum. Technological changes that took place towards the end of the last century ignited the migration from rural areas to urban areas in all over the world. A neglected area of law such as this, exists which is as crucial as much as any other arena of law keeping in mind the dilapidated conditions of the urban economically backward. The sustainable urban developments have become need of time for the prosperity of the country, giving rise to innovative concepts such ‘smart city’. The issue of collective efforts is unfortunately not addressed in the same till date. Unplanned expansion of the urban areas and the absence of any legal framework to address the problem arising due to unprepared extension facilitated the exploitation of the local resources and increased the burden on the same.

Thus, it was found necessary to realize the collective notion of property and whether to protect it through urban laws. The question of traditional cultural conflict, regionalism and other problems can be addressed through the urban laws. We will be providing an overview of the modern teaching strategies based on scientific temperament and need of such tools in the times to come. The seven days refresher course is aimed at evolving a group of experts in this specialized area. The program will be giving special emphasis on the teaching and learning of Urban Law keeping in mind the huge migration and expansion of the urban area throughout the nation. It has created many issues and challenges for the residents of urban areas and legal authorities to identify the key issues and make proper regulation to address the problem. The areas that require regulation are determinate, nonetheless ever expansive be it the field of information technology, primary and secondary rights of the domicile, garbage disposal including sanitary waste, accommodation, environment sustainability, water supply, religious & cultural rights, protection from crimes, etc. It has become incumbent not only for the government and policy makers but also for the academicians and law professional to bring about possible solutions and also place this subject as substantive law and evolve the teaching strategy and methodology which can enable the students not only to get knowledge of the same but also impart to them a critical  approach to think about the existing situation and the solutions.
